BCSEA Launches SolarBC with $5 Million Investment from Provincial Government

The British Columbia Sustainable Energy Association (BCSEA) and BC Government announced the creation of the SolarBC solar hot water program this month – a program intended to encourage the installation of solar hot water heating in throughout British Columbia under the following categories:

Residential Retrofit • Social Housing Solar • Local Government Solar ThermalSolar for Schools • First Nations Solar • Solar Communities

The goal of the program is to influence policy and building regulations, reduce barriers to the widespread adoption of solar hot water, and achieve a market transformation for solar hot water technologies in BC.

"We will be establishing five Solar Communities that will take on a leadership role and act as flagship communities in the province," said SolarBC executive director Nitya Harris. "Together with these communities we will launch training and outreach programs that will build capacity and raise awareness of solar hot water."

SolarBC offers a $1,000 point-of-sale discount to individual households on solar hot water installations. SolarBC incentives are now available and can be combined with an additional $500 from the ecoENERGY Retrofit Program and $125 from the LiveSmart BC Program.

For further details see the SolarBC homepage at www.solarbc.ca

British Columbia Launches New Google Earth Functionality

BCEIA_Logo

The Provincial Government and search engine giant, Google Inc., are working together to develop a new informatics tool for the GeoBC Geographic Gateway (as popularized under Victoria’s ’Gateway’ theme) that combines the latest software mapping technologies from the private sector, with natural resource datasets drawn from a host of BC Ministries.

Through the Google Earth desktop software application, GeoBC can now provide British Columbians with quick access to a wealth of public information in a visual platform that would typically not be accessed due to the high costs associated with dedicated software development.

In return, Google Inc. gains entrée to the government’s one-metre/one-pixel, hi-res satellite surveys and other integrated Crown land and resource management data for the development of interactive mapping layers on its Google Earth program.

GeoBC is overseen by the Integrated Land Management Bureau (ILMB) and is a free service available online at www.geobc.gov.bc.ca

BCEIA Members Make Impact at Community Career Fair

The BCEIA’s Jeff Eltom spent a day representing member companies at the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation’s Trades Solutions Career Fair in downtown Vancouver last week.

100s of prospective employees –a great many of whom are highly educated degree holders– crushed the BCEIA display table in an effort to learn more about the Association, the long-term growth and career potential of working in the environmental industry but most of all, to browse through the large catalog of jobs currently posted within the BCEIA membership.

Engineering career opportunities at Golder, EarthTech and Westport were eagerly pored over while prospects patiently waited their turn to view the biologist positions up for grabs at Jacques Whitford. Hard science, laboratory and biotech opportunities made the Cantest, SGS and Bodycote portfolios popular as well.

As one beaming candidate remarked, "I fit this job perfectly. This is me. This is very me. Thank you for being here."

The S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation was more than pleased with the turnout and has approached the BCEIA to consider anchoring a dedicated environment industry – sustainable energy – green building career fair with direct participation from BCEIA member companies.
