2009 Energy & Environment Summer Reception

The BCEIA is set to host its inaugural Energy & Environment Summer Reception at the Terminal City Club, Vancouver: Tuesday, July 21 | 16:00 – 18:30hrs.

To mark the occasion, the BCEIA President and Board of Directors are pleased to announce the participation of a 10-member trade delegation from the State of Texas, led by Texas Secretary of State, Esperanza “Hope” Andrade.

Enjoy Hors d’oeurves & refreshments on TCC’s private patio – a casual forum for business and government leaders of both jurisdictions to meet, discuss and develop stronger economic, social and trade relationships under the energy & environment banner.

For ticket information and guest list, contact Jeff Eltom, Executive Director directly at 604.683.2751.  Select sponsorship opportunities are available.  Limited engagement... RSVP early!

Contaminated Sites Workshop Fort St. John

The BCEIA was in Fort St. John recently as guests of the BC Ministry of Environment’s Land Remediation Section and participant in said department’s Contaminated Sites BC Update.  This two-day seminar, situated squarely in the heart of the province’s booming O&G community, offered an in-depth overview of the many environmental rules & protocols that stakeholders must adhere to.

Said overview is well warranted, especially, when one considers the juxtaposition of pre-dominantly Alberta-based energy & environment operators, operating under BC jurisdictional purview, in a section of British Columbia that is for all intents and purposes... Albertan. | MORE

The LEED-certified Building Program Takes a Hit

Authors G.R. Newsham, S. Mancini and B. Brit from the National Research Council of Canada’s Institute for Research in Construction have quietly discovered some inconsistencies with LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) building standards.

The following is an excerpt from their report, “Do LEED-certified Buildings Save Energy? Yes, but...”

We conducted a re-analysis of data supplied by the New Buildings Institute and the US Green Buildings Council on measured energy use data from 100 LEED certified commercial and institutional buildings. These data were compared to the energy use of the general US commercial building stock.  We also examined energy use by LEED certification level, and by energy-related credits achieved in the certification process.

On average, LEED buildings used 18-39% less energy per floor area than their conventional counterparts. However, 28-35% of LEED buildings used more energy than their conventional counterparts. Further, the measured energy performance of LEED buildings had little correlation with certification level of the building, or the number of energy credits achieved by the building at design time.
