BCEIA and Member Companies Join Premier’s Green Delegation to ASIABCEIA Environment mission to Asia

British Columbia’s largest-ever green business delegation, lead by Premier Gordon Campbell, leaves for Korea and China this week to promote B.C. expertise in clean energy and environmental technology and pursue opportunities in trade education and investment.  Premier Campbell will also officially open the B.C. Canada Pavilion in Beijing. 

“British Columbia has world-leading expertise in green technology and green design, and this mission will help us make valuable connections to two of Asia’s burgeoning economies who are looking for ways to become more sustainable and, like British Columbia, reduce their footprint on the planet,” said Premier Campbell. “We will also forge relationships with key education and research facilities, and mining, shipping, and transportation investors; and promote B.C. as the host of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.”

Highlights of the mission include:

Seoul & Suwon, South Korea, May 19-21
• Highlight B.C.’s clean technology and green design expertise in a keynote speech to the Korea International Trade Association.
• Meet with the Prime Minister of Korea, Han Seung-Soo, to discuss trade between B.C. and South Korea, highlight B.C. technology and promote B.C.’s natural resource sector, including forestry and mining.
• Meet with Gyeonggi Province Governor Moo-Soo Kim and establish a sister-province relationship with the South Korean province of Gyeonngi to forge stronger social and trade relations between provinces.

Beijing, China, May 21-24
• Officially open the B.C. Canada Pavilion at the site of the 2008 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
• Showcase B.C. clean technology and green design to representatives of the Chinese government and business community at the B.C. Canada Pavilion.
• Meet with Beijing municipal government officials to discuss Olympic preparations and tour venues for the 2008 Games.
• Speak at a reception for B.C. alumni living and working in China and launch the BC Alumni Program in Beijing.
• Meet with the Chinese Minister of Science and Technology (MOST), Wan Gang, and announce the winning B.C. and Chinese projects under an MOU between MOST and the BC Innovation Council.


Brownie Award Nominations

The Canadian Urban Institute’s Brownie Awards program, sponsored by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, recognizes excellence in brownfields policy, sustainable development and urban design.

If you know of a brownfields-related project or program, we encourage you to send in a nomination for this year’s awards program. You can find more information and application forms on the CUI web site at www.canadianbrownfields.ca. The deadline to apply is June 1, 2008.

The CUI Brownie Awards Selection Committee, made up of representatives from key industry and professional organizations, will review the applications. Finalists will be announced in early October and winners will be presented at the CUI Brownie Awards ceremony and gala dinner at the Canadian Brownfields Conference in Toronto on October 23, 2008.


IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR BCEIA MEMBERS

Over the next several months, the BC Ministry of Environment (MOE) intends to continue its review and revision of the Environment Management Act (EMA) as it pertains to Hazardous Waste Regulation in the province. 

This EMA review will take place in two-stages.  The first stage encompasses those changes identified and discussed in the Ministry’s intentions paper released this past January, while the second stage of the review, seeks to explore more complex and integrated issues as identified by stakeholders in the hazardous waste sector.

A second-stage intentions paper has been posted on the MOE website here.  Comments and suggestions from BCEIA members, industry stakeholders and the public are strongly encouraged and may be submitted using the appropriate forms - no later than June 5, 2008.

The appropriate forms, as well as prior commentary concerning the Ministry’s January intentions paper, are available for download from the MOE website.

Note: January’s commentary will be compiled in a Consultation Summary Report and posted shortly.

Sustainable Cool - EP!C Expo 2008

Vancouver’s coolest green-living show wrapped up this weekend at the Vancouver Exhibition and Convention Center.  EP!C attendees were wowed by a host of eco-inspired technologies and sustainable choices from a broad range of home, health, transportation, food and beauty products & services.

This year’s event featured special guest handyman Mike Holmes from Home & Garden Television’s, Holmes on Homes and live auditions for inclusion on CBC’s Dragon’s Den, the reality TV series where entrepreneurs compete for angel funding from a celebrity panel of business savvy professionals. 

The Capers-Whole Foods Kitchen Stage cooked up a storm, local fashion designers modeled the latest in retro-recycled chic and Toyota and GM provided audiences with a glimpse of what scaled-down, efficient auto transport looks like.

  • Vancouver, British Columbia (April 30th, 2008)
    Recognizing the need for a larger capacity materials recovery facility (MRF) in Vancouver’s Lower Mainland, Metro Waste Paper Recovery Inc. is taking a major step forward with the opening of a new 80,000 square foot multi-stream recycling and processing facility.
    In addition to the conventional methods of the collection and processing of recyclable materials, this new facility will also be fully equipped to now offer customers the option of co-mingling their recyclable materials. More

  • BC MoE to Develop Ambient Air Quality Criteria
    The Ministry of Environment intends to establish provincial ambient air quality criteria for PM2.5 (particulate matter 2.5 µm or smaller) addressing objectives for 24-hour and annual averages, and longer-term planning goals.  As part of this process the ministry developed a policy intentions papers for consultation (intentions papers).  The intentions paper for the Provincial Ambient Air Quality Criteria for Particulate Matter (PM2.5) was posted in January of 2007.

    A summary document of all comments received has been compiled by an independent contractor.  A copy of the “Summary of Consultation Comments” has now been posted on the ministry website here.
