Sludge management is an ever-increasing problem due to the environmental pollution it creates and the large amount of energy consumption it requires. Since the sludge has a high percentage of moisture and large volume, it is very difficult to transport and dispose. Currently, most countries, especially in Europe, have deemed sludge unfit for further usages such as fertilizers.

Its high moisture content and foul odor also prevents it from being used in industries as a source of fuel. Without effective dehydrating of the secondary sludge, disposal of the secondary sludge presents a huge problem for municipalities.
