BCEIA News Update – January 19, 2007 This newsletter can also be viewed online. 2010 Sustainable Business Opportunities On February 28, 2007, the 2010 Commerce Centre and the BC Environment Industry Association will host a 2010 Procurement Workshop focused on sustainable business opportunities associated with upcoming 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver-Whistler. Workshop participants will each receive an in-depth guide on how to take advantage of these opportunities. Presentations by 2010 Commerce Centre staff will be supplemented by comments from companies that have won contracts for these upcoming events. You will benefit from the guidance and advice drawn from their experiences. In addition, staff of the 2010 Commerce centre will be on hand for one-on-one discussions where you can get instant feedback on your sustainability ideas. Export Centre Climate plan: clean energy funding OTTAWA, January 17, 2007 (GLOBE-Net) – The federal government has announced a $230 million fund to promote the development and demonstration of clean-energy technologies, including clean coal and carbon capture, in the first of a series of planned announcements on energy and the environment. The ecoEnergy Technology Initiative will form a large part of the government’s climate change strategy, which is expected to include intensity targets for greenhouse gas emissions by 2015. More... Free Contaminated Site Workshops The Land Remediation Section of the Ministry of Environment will be hosting a series of consultation meetings on February 7 and 8, 2007. The sessions will provide an overview of new documents recently released by the ministry and an update regarding the development of the Contaminated Sites Approved Professional Society. These meetings are free, but each session is limited to 200 attendees. More... February 22: Draft Revisions and Other Planned Changes to the Contaminated Site Regulatory Regime in BC. February 23: Current Practice and Ramifications of Revised Regulations to Implementing Risk-based Approaches at Contaminated Sites in BC. More... Sustainable Development Mission to Washington, DC An invitation has been extended to BCEIA and environmental industry companies in B.C. to participate in a sustainable development mission to the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank being organized by the Canadian Private Sector Liaison Officer (PSLO) Network of the World Bank. The mission is scheduled for February 6-8, 2007. More information is available here SDTC call for clean water and soil technologies On January 24, 2007 Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) will open its Call for Applications for its next funding round. It will be seeking applications for technologies that provide clean water, clean soil, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. More... New fact Sheet on Contaminated Sites The Land Remediation Section of the Ministry of Environment's Environmental Management Branch has added a new fact sheet to the Land Remediation web site about information you can obtain on sites in our SWIS, WASTE and COORS databases. Respectively, these databases deal with hazardous waste, waste discharges, and convictions under the Environmental Management Act related to pollution and contamination. Ministry of Environment seeks public comment The Land Remediation Section of the Ministry of Environment is seeking stakeholder comments on a number of draft documents pertaining to contaminated site assessment. The Ministry has also issued a Request for Qualifications to persons on the Roster of Approved Professionals (and their firms). This Request is expected to result in a list of qualified suppliers. Ministry of Environment releases compliance summary VICTORIA Dec. 22, 2006 - The third Quarterly Compliance and Enforcement Summary for 2006 released by the Ministry of Environment just prior to Christmas reports on compliance and enforcement actions taken across the entire ministry between July 1, 2006 and Sept. 30, 2006. In all 11 orders were issued to prevent or stop impacts to the environment, human health or safety; 42 administrative licensing sanctions taken; 695 tickets were issued, and 5 court convictions.
