Union of BC Municipalities to hold Environmental Conference
BCEIA member Jared Wright reports that the UBCM is hosting a two day "Local Government and the Environment Conference" on June 27-28th, at the Best Western Richmond Hotel and Convention Centre in Richmond, BC. This year's environment conference builds upon the success of, and recommendations received at, the 2005 UBCM environment conference. It will provide regulatory updates, identify existing gaps in the management of environmental issues, and outline tools that local governments can use in decision-making processes. We intend for the conference to foster critical discussion around best practices and innovative community programs, as well as explore the development of effective partnerships amongst all orders of government.
The conference will tackle some of the most pressing environmental issues facing communities across the province including climate change, contaminated sites, sewerage systems, alternative energy and water stewardship. The conference program also includes opportunities for delegates to speak with senior provincial and federal staff on environmental policies, regulations, and community programs. Provincial interest in this conference is high - the Honourable Barry Penner will be making a closing address, and the deputy minister and several assistant deputy ministers from the Ministry of Environment will be in attendance throughout the conference.
This conference will be of particular interest to elected officials, senior administrators, and environmental management staff. The conference agenda and registration form are available under the "events" section of the UBCM website at:
